How to become a Licensed Solar Installer in Florida

Solar installation contractors working in Florida are required to have a certification through FLASEIA - the Florida Solar Energy Industries Association. However, individuals working for the contractor are not required to have a license.

Florida also has reciprocity agreements with Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina making licensure in the State a good option for contractors looking to work in the area.

The state certification (licensure) for solar contractors is required by anyone who installs, alters, repairs, maintains, relocates or replaces any type of solar thermal or PV systems. Individuals employed by the contractor are not required to be licensed.

The main license you need to install PV solar systems in Florida is the CV – Certified solar contractor - classification.

Scope of work covers residential and commercial solar water heating, solar pool heating and photovoltaic (solar electric, or PV) systems. The CV license holder is exempt from subcontracting certain roofing, plumbing and electrical work on residential installations

A person will qualify for a certified license by meeting one of the following requirements:

• Four year construction-related degree from an accredited college (equivalent to three years experience) and
  one year proven experience applicable to the category for which you are applying.
• One year experience as a foreman and not less than three years of credits from accredited college-level
  courses.
• One year experience as a worker, one year experience as a foreman, and two years of credits from
  accredited college-level courses.
• Two years experience as a worker, one year experience as a foreman, and one year of credits from
  accredited college-level courses.
• Four years experience as a worker or foreman of which at least one year must have been as a foreman.

MILITARY VETERANS:

A veteran will qualify for a certified license by meeting one of the following:

• Three years of military service and one year experience as a foreman applicable to the category for which
  you are applying.
• Two years of military service, one year experience as a foreman, and one year experience as a worker or
  foreman applicable to the category for which you are applying.
• One year of military service, one year experience as a foreman, and two years experience as a worker or
  foreman applicable to the category for which you are applying.

Background Check

You will be required to have your fingerprints scanned and your criminal background checked against Federal Bureau of Investigations and Florida Department of Law Enforcement database.

To do this, you will need to complete a DBPR application, complete an Applicant Consent and Waiver Agreement for Criminal History Records Check, and pay a $37.50 fee.

If you have a criminal history, your application will be reviewed by the department to ensure that your criminal history will not statutorily disqualify you from becoming licensed in that particular profession. Depending on the type of criminal offense(s), your application might require board review or require your personal appearance before the board. You will be notified in writing of any required appearance before the board.
